Team efficiency

Offensive rating

Points scored per 100 possessions.

What it teaches

  • How potent an offense is after removing pace.
  • Whether “we score a lot” is real offense or just a fast game.

What it doesn't

  • Defense.
  • Individual shot-making alone when used as a team number.

Upsides

  • Comparable across fast and slow teams.
  • Pairs well with the Four Factors.

Downsides

  • Individual ORtg definitions differ and can mislead.
  • Needs enough possessions.

How to apply it

  • Team building: raise ORtg via eFG%, fewer turnovers, offensive boards, FT rate.
  • Don’t confuse player ORtg with team ORtg.
