Net rating
Point margin per 100 possessions: offense minus defense.
What it teaches
- Whether a team (or on-court group) outscores opponents on a possession-normalized scale.
- The cleanest single scoreboard for “are we winning the run of play?”
What it doesn't
- Individual credit by itself.
- Schedule strength automatically.
- Future health or regression.
Upsides
- Pace-proof comparison across eras of different speed.
- Ties directly to winning.
Downsides
- Noisy in small samples.
- Player on/off net is teammate-contaminated.
How to apply it
- Team tier lists and playoff outlooks.
- For lineups, always check how many possessions the net rating covers.
